In the US, beer is undergoing a long-term shift, with no-alcohol growth helping offset declining consumption, according to IWSR. In 2024, the US beer market hit $116.8 billion, with craft beer up 3.4% to $28.8 billion, according to the Beer Institute. Craft beers account for 24.7% of the total US beer market. Innova Market Insight’s data revealed that 34% of consumers in the US and Canada prefer craft beer. On-premise draft beer attracted 52.3% of total beer sales (by volume) – 0.9 percentage points more than in the previous 12 months, according to CGA by NIQ. North America is the second-largest global region for beer launches, accounting for 36% of global beer launches. Furthermore, new beers accounted for 45% of US alcoholic beverages in the past year.

Younger Demographics Changing Behavior Towards Alcohol

The younger demographics, such as Millennials and Generation Z, focus on both mental and physical health and wellness. Consumers’ attitudes towards alcohol are evolving, and these generations view it negatively and how it impacts their overall well-being. For this reason, both generations are drinking less and in moderation. This demographic is looking for feelings of ease and connection without the need for alcohol and without the hangover. Hangxiety (the portmanteau of hangover and anxiety) has been rising, described as “the heightened anxiety, regret, and emotional distress that accompanies alcohol recovery.” A survey found that 70-80% of Gen Z and Millennials report experiencing weekly hangxiety episodes, with many spending up to two hours daily managing alcohol-related worry and regret.

Labeled the “sober curious” generation, Gen Z drinks 20% less alcohol per capita than Millennials did at their age. Attest’s survey of 1,000 Gen Zers in the US discovered that health concerns are a key factor in abstaining, with 34% citing mental health and 46% simply not being interested. According to Innova Market Insights, 27% of Gen Z and 31% of Millennials in the US and Canada opted for lower-alcohol beers in the past year. This preference is reflected in the 29% growth in low- or no-alcohol beer and cider launches in the US beer market. The Beer Institute survey revealed that 61% of Gen Z and Millennial consumers say they’d choose an NA version of their favorite beer. A telltale sign of the shift in behavior is that Heineken 0.0 accounts for 7% of all Heineken brand sales in the US; it was introduced in 2017.

From carbonated and still water to lo-no alcoholic beverages and TTB approved flavors, Flavor Dynamics caters to diverse demographics across multiple beverage applications. Contact us today to discuss your alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage needs.

Low-ABV And Non-Alcoholic Beers Gain Momentum

According to Heineken, the global non-alcoholic beer market is worth $13.7 billion. NA beer sales are up 22.2% year-to-date, while on-premise sales grew 26.4%, according to the Beer Institute. IWSR reports that US no-alcohol beer volumes jumped 23% in 2024, up 175% since 2019. In 2024, non-alcoholic beer experienced a 9% growth globally and is projected to surpass ale in 2025, becoming the second-largest beer segment, following only lager. This rapid expansion is projected to achieve an 18% CAGR by 2029. Furthermore, no-alc beer is projected to generate an additional $2 billion in value in the US over the next five years. Consumers purchased 22% more non-alcoholic beer in the 12 months ending November 2024 compared to the same period the previous year, per Circana. DoorDash’s Delivery Trends 2025 Report saw an 82% increase in orders with non-alcoholic beer from 2023 to 2024.

Beer Manufacturers Innovate

Beer manufacturers are innovating with new beer flavors and functional ingredients. This summer, Athletic Brewing Co. introduced a Cocktail-Inspired line of four non-alcoholic beers: Bellini, Mule, Paloma, and Spritz. The Mule’s description reads “Spicy ginger and tart lime bring the bold without the hangover.” Gabyr, co-founded by neuropsychopharmacologist Professor David Nutt, offers Pale and Stout at 0.5% ABV. They are formulated with ingredients to support the body’s own GABA systems for feelings of ease and connection without the need for alcohol. High & Dry Lager, brewed in the UK, features British malted barley and Czech Saaz hops for citrus notes of lime, tangerine, and lemongrass, plus lion’s mane and cordyceps mushrooms for added functional benefits. Heineken is rolling out two new non-alcoholic beer flavors: Cold Pressed Lime and Nectarine Juniper across 14 US markets in 2026.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Samuel Adams has launched its 2025 Utopias, which features a 30% ABV, making it illegal to sell in 15 states. The high-powered ale, Utopias, is a blend of vintages that have aged up to 30 years in Irish Whiskey, Cognac, Ruby Port, and Scotch barrels and casks. It contains “layered flavors of caramel, oak, dried fruit, smoke, and subtle citrus.”

Taste & Flavor Drive Beer Innovation

Beer, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, offers refreshing tastes and flavors with a variety of profiles. Innova Market Insights data showed that 45% of US and Canadian consumers consider taste experience an important aspect when considering food and beverage brands. According to Attest’s survey of 1,000 Gen Zers, 2 in 3 (62.3%) said taste is the primary factor influencing their alcohol choices, reflecting a preference for flavor and enjoyment over other considerations. “Beers are pivoting back towards lighter, lower in alcohol, and more refreshing styles,” states af&co. & Carbonate. In the US, Innova’s research revealed that India pale ale leads with 43% of beer launches, while pilsner beer displays significant growth of 21% CAGR over the past year. In flavored beers, vanilla, orange, strawberry, mango, and peach are leading flavors in beer launches over the past year.

Seasonal Beers And Collaborations

For the fall, Yuengling launched an Apple Beer that features a bright apple aroma and a refreshing, mildly tart taste balanced by a hop and malt profile. Tip Top Cocktails created the “Kindred Spirits: A Brewery Collaboration Series” and partnered with five breweries to reimagine classic cocktails. In October, Tip Top launched the Neon Cylinders: Origami Orange RTD cocktail in collaboration with Creature Comforts Brewing Co. Tip Top Cocktails’ Paper Plane was the inspiration for this intensely fruity sour ale and features cara cara orange, lemon, and a Tip Top Paper Plane botanical blend. In collaboration with Esther Price, Warped Wing Brewing Co.’s new seasonal release is Esther’s Li’l Secret Caramel Pecan Doppelbock.

Inspired by the Noche Buena, Modelo debuted the Modelo Noche Especial, a limited-edition amber lager featuring a toasted, caramel malt flavor and aromatic profile. Hotaling & Co. unveiled its 2025 edition of Old Potrero Christmas Spirit, distilled from the 2015 San Francisco Christmas Ale and aged for nine years in Old Potrero barrels. The flavor is “a bouquet of spiced fruit cake, candied orange, and evergreen with sweet malt, baking spices, fresh ginger, and light oak.” Samuel Adams released Winter White Ale, a festive brew with orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove – their first new winter seasonal in 30 years.

Global Consumers’ Beer Preferences

Global consumers enjoy traditional plain beer with intense flavors, with 41% favoring it, while 35% prefer authentic or traditional brewing methods, a preference that rises with age. Globally, flavored beers show 7% growth in launches, while unflavored beers display 2% CAGR over the past five years. Fruit flavors lead with 17% of launches. 1 in 3 global households purchase beer, while 1 in 10 prefer cider. The top 3 global preferences in flavored beer are red raspberry, lemon, and mango. Dessert and bakery-inspired flavors are the fastest-growing. In flavored cider, consumers like strawberry, lime, and peach, with hot, spicy, and floral flavors increasing, according to Innova.

Beer Spills Into Other Food & Beverage Categories

Food and beverage collaborations have been trending, and beer is spilling into other applications. For example, Dunkin’ has been collaborating with Harpoon Brewery on seasonal, fall limited-edition beers since 2018. This year, the brands crafted the Harpoon Dunkin’ Nitro Brown Sugar Shakin’ Espresso Stout. It is Harpoon’s first-ever fully nitrogenated standalone packaged beer. The 6% ABV stout contains Dunkin’ espresso and a swirl of brown sugar. Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. have teamed up on the two limited-edition beverages. Holland’s non-alcoholic beer brand Bero launched Bero Coffee Draught, a 0.5% ABV featuring a lightly caffeinated (5 mg) nitrogen-infused stout-style. Downey Jr.’s slow-roasted Happy Coffee launched Eternal Hoptimist, a 100% arabica blend inspired by Bero’s hops.

Beer Blends Well With Savory Applications

On the savory side, beer is appearing in snacks, soups, and seasonings. This summer, Pringles and Miller Lite collaborated on two limited-edition flavors inspired by beer-infused backyard barbecues. Pringles x Miller Lite Beer Can Chicken combines savory roasted chicken with garlic, onion, and Original Light Beer. Pringles x Miller Lite Grilled Beer Brat features smoky grilled brat, black pepper, caramelized onion, and brown spices. Campbell’s and Pabst Blue Ribbon partnered on two beer-flavored soups. The Chunky Beer Cheese with Potatoes and Chorizo, and Beef, Bacon, and Beer Chili with Beans are exclusive to Walmart. Sauce makers Rufus Teague and Garage Beer teamed up on two new beer-infused BBQ sauces. The Amped-Up Beer-B-Q is “bold and tangy with just the right amount of kick.” The Classic Beer-B-Q is “A sweet and smoky classic with a beer-forward finish.”

Even lip balm is influencing beer. Inspired by Blue Moon’s signature Valencia orange garnish, Eos and Blue Moon created a Limited-Edition Valencia Orange Lip Balm. It “delivers the same refreshing, juicy taste of the Valencia orange.”
